Why Everything Smells Stronger When You Fast

Somewhere around day two of a fast, a lot of people notice something strange. Coffee brewing in another room hits like a wall. You can tell what your neighbours are cooking. A bakery three streets away suddenly has a location. It is not your imagination - your sense of smell really does get sharper when you fast. Here is what is going on.

The short answer

It is real: a fasted body measurably raises smell sensitivity, especially to food. The hunger hormone ghrelin acts directly on the smell system.

It is old: for most of human history, hunger meant you had not found food yet. A sharper nose when hungry was a survival edge.

An old survival trick

For most of human history, going without food was not a wellness choice - it meant you had not found any. A body that got better at finding food when it was hungry had an edge over one that did not, and a sharper sense of smell was one of the tools. The honest version of this claim

The ghrelin-smell link is well documented in animals and shown in small human studies. Nobody has measured smell thresholds hour by hour across a 72-hour water fast, so the exact size of the effect at hour 40 versus hour 60 is not known. What is well established is the direction: hunger sharpens smell, fullness dulls it, and ghrelin is a big part of why.

Ketosis turns the volume up

Once you are a day or more into a fast, your body switches from running mostly on glucose to running mostly on ketones. Many people describe this state as clearer and more alert - the mental fog of the first day lifts, and there is often a slightly wired quality to it. Part of that is the change in the brain's fuel. Part is a shift in the nervous system toward a more focused, watchful setting: the same adrenaline-adjacent state that keeps a hungry animal scanning its environment.

That heightened alertness turns the volume up on all your senses, not just smell. Sounds seem crisper, colours more vivid, and smells that you would normally filter out get through. Why food smells stand out most
